A Pilgrim’s Journey: My Hajj Experience and Lessons Learned
Introduction
Performing Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is filled with challenges, emotions, and spiritual growth. This blog shares my personal journey, from booking through the Nusuk platform to completing the pilgrimage and reflecting on the lessons learned. I hope this account provides insight, guidance, and motivation for those preparing for their own Hajj.
The Journey Begins: Booking Through Nusuk
The process of booking our Hajj package through Nusuk was one of the most stressful experiences. Since Nusuk is a relatively new platform for pilgrims from Latin America, North America, Europe, and Australia, there were many uncertainties. The website did not announce when packages would be available, leading us to check constantly, sometimes every few minutes. The pressure was intense—staying up at night, logging in repeatedly, and dealing with technical issues.
After countless attempts and frustrations, we finally managed to secure a luxury shifting package for around €4,000 per person. It was an emotional moment filled with relief and gratitude.
The Benefits of a Shifting Package
We chose a shifting package over a non-shifting one, and in hindsight, this was one of the best decisions we made. Here’s why:
-
Cost Efficiency – Non-shifting packages place you in a luxury hotel near the Haram for the entire duration, but during Hajj, you spend most of your time in Mina, making the cost unjustifiable.
-
Convenient Location – Our shifting hotel in Aziziyah was ideally located between Mina and the Jamarat, making it easier to return for rest, showers, and food. This provided much-needed relief from the intense heat and crowded camps.
The Hajj Experience: From Mina to Arafah and Beyond
1. The First Days: Mina and Arafah
Our Hajj officially began with our stay in Mina. Our camp, while not the most luxurious, was sufficient. However, the extreme heat made it challenging, with temperatures reaching up to 52°C. We constantly poured water over ourselves to stay cool, but despite the hardships, the experience was deeply rewarding.
The Day of Arafah was the most spiritually intense day. Standing in Wuquf, making dua, and reflecting on our sins and prayers for the future was an overwhelming and emotional experience.
2. The Days of Jamarat and Sacrifice
After Arafah, we proceeded to Muzdalifah for the night, where we collected stones for the Jamarat. The stoning of the three Jamarat pillars over the following days required patience and stamina, but we were able to manage our time efficiently by returning to our hotel in Aziziyah between the rituals to rest.
3. Tawaf al-Ifadah and Completion of Hajj
Following the stoning rituals, we performed Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i in Masjid al-Haram. This signified the near completion of our Hajj. Before leaving Makkah, we completed Tawaf al-Wada, the farewell circumambulation of the Kaaba.
Key Takeaways and Advice for Future Pilgrims
-
Prepare for the Heat – The temperatures can be extreme, so bring cooling towels, electrolyte drinks, and light, breathable clothing.
-
Choose Your Package Wisely – A shifting package provides better comfort and flexibility, making the experience more manageable.
-
Pack Light – Camps in Mina have limited space, so only bring essentials in a small backpack.
-
Expect Delays – Transport can be unpredictable, so be patient and prepared for long waits.
-
Maintain Spiritual Focus – Amidst the logistical challenges, remember the essence of Hajj: purification, supplication, and drawing closer to Allah.
Final Reflections
Alhamdulillah, our Hajj was an unforgettable experience filled with challenges, emotions, and spiritual fulfillment. While the journey was physically and mentally demanding, the rewards far outweighed the struggles.
If you are preparing for Hajj, take your time to plan well, remain patient, and embrace the experience fully. May Allah grant you a blessed and accepted Hajj, and may He accept all our good deeds. Ameen.
